IT'S OK TO TURN CUSTOMERS AWAYPosted: 25th Feb 2016 by IMAGE 1ST PHOTOSHOOTS IN LONDON
To truly love what you do, you first need to position yourself as an expert in your field.
Once you've built a substantial client base, you can really focus on the jobs that make you happy.
Let me tell you a story. Last week I was approached by a company that wanted 25 corporate headshots, the job was worth over £1000.
The prospect asked for my expert opinion on how to approach their new team page. I advised against their current idea which was to photograph in black & white with everyone looking away from the camera, (see BLACK & WHITE example in the photo above).
My team put together a detailed visual brief explaining that eye contact between two people is one of the most powerful acts of communication, (see COLOUR example in the photo above).
Eye contact shows that you're interested in building relationships as well as being the right person to discuss new business with.
The response from the prospect was that they preferred to look away. They also tried to haggle our price and generally became an irritation, with constant e-mails questioning our expertise. (see my blog on How To Deal With Hagglers).
PROBLEM PROSPECTS DRAIN YOUR TIME.
To set yourself up for a good growth path, you need to drop the time wasters that do not share your passion, ideas and creativity. Focus your efforts with customers that understand your vision, not only will you love to keep them happy, but your desire for the job itself will make you feel motivated and engaged.
As the saying goes, 'Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life'.
Taking on jobs that make you unhappy will demotivate you and stop you from building long-term relationships with people that matter most.
